When custom bracing helps
Custom braces are used when off-the-shelf support isn't enough — most often knee osteoarthritis (especially unloader braces), post-surgical knee and ankle support, and chronic ligament instability where fit and fine-tuning matter.
Off-the-shelf braces work for many situations. Custom is when biomechanical correction is part of the prescription — pulling the joint into better alignment, unloading a specific compartment, or matching a complex anatomy.

What to expect at your first visit
Assessment and measurement run 45 minutes. Manufacturing takes 2–4 weeks. Fitting takes 30 minutes to confirm comfort and function. Most extended-health plans cover custom bracing with a prescription; WCB and MVA claims cover bracing when clinically indicated.

How long does a brace last?
Most custom braces last 2–4 years with regular use. Hardware wear or changes to your body — weight, alignment, post-surgical recovery — may shorten that. We re-fit annually if needed.
Can I take a brace off when I sleep?
For most non-surgical conditions, yes — overnight rest helps the surrounding tissue. Post-surgical and acute injury protocols may require continuous wear initially; your prescribing therapist will tell you specifically what your protocol is.
