Craniosacral Therapy

Gentle therapy supporting the central nervous system.

Practitioner’s hands gently placed on a patient’s temples and forehead during a craniosacral therapy session

What is craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is a very gentle hands-on technique that works with the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Touch is light — about the weight of a nickel — and treatment is delivered fully clothed.

It's a calming modality, often used alongside other treatment rather than on its own. Many patients find it deeply relaxing; some drift off mid-session. The work targets restriction and tension in the central nervous system.

When this helps

  • Tension headaches

Headaches that haven't settled with massage or medication.

  • TMJ and jaw pain

Often combined with intra-oral work where the case calls for it.

  • Neck stiffness

Chronic neck tightness that doesn't fully release with deeper work.

  • Post-concussion

Settling persistent post-concussion symptoms — particularly when nervous-system overdrive is part of the picture.

  • Chronic stress

Patients carrying long-standing stress in the body — the gentle approach is often more tolerable than deep tissue work.

What to expect at your first visit

Sessions are 60 minutes. The first visit includes an intake conversation. Follow-up cadence varies — weekly to monthly depending on what we\'re addressing. Billed under the practitioner\'s primary licence (physiotherapy or massage therapy), covered by most extended health plans accordingly.

Common questions

What is craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is a very gentle hands-on technique that works with the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Touch is light — about the weight of a nickel — and treatment is delivered fully clothed. It's used to address tension and restriction in the central nervous system.

What conditions does it help with?

Patients seek craniosacral therapy for tension headaches, jaw pain (TMJ), neck stiffness, post-concussion symptoms, and chronic stress. It's often used alongside other treatment rather than as a standalone intervention.

Is it like massage?

No — pressure is much lighter. Massage works through palpable manipulation of muscle tissue; craniosacral therapy works through subtle contact and listening to the body's response. Many patients find it deeply relaxing, sometimes drifting off during the session.

How long is a typical session?

60 minutes. The first visit includes an intake conversation and assessment, so allow extra time. Follow-up cadence varies — weekly to monthly depending on the issue.

Is craniosacral therapy covered by insurance?

When delivered by a registered massage therapist or physiotherapist trained in the technique, it's billed under that profession and is covered by most extended health plans. We'll confirm with your insurer.

We direct-bill most major insurers. Bring your card and we handle the paperwork.
